Banff warden Karsten Heuer set off last spring on his 3,400-km hike from Yellowstone to Yukon, worried that his effort to promote a protected wilderness corridor along the length of the Rocky Mountains would be dismissed as starry-eyed. With little interest initially from the Canadian Parks Service, lukewarm public attention and a cold, snowy launch that forced him to re-route on several occasions in northern Wyoming, it looked like he might have a lonely, gruelling adventure ahead.
