Banff community plan approved by Feds December 11, 1998
Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps and Secretary of State (Parks) Andy Mitchell today announced the approval of the Town of Banff Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw. The approval ensures the Community Plan adheres to the steps announced on June 26, 1998 to preserve the ecological integrity of National Parks. The June 26, 1998 announcement of new protection measures for Canada's National Parks introduced a number of measures specific to the Town of Banff. The major components to guide development were: strict architectural guidelines, appropriate use guidelines, adherence to the principle of no net negative environmental impact, limits to annual growth rate, a residential cap below that established in the Park Management Plan, actions to preserve built heritage within the community and a limit of 350,000 square feet of future allowable commercial development.
