Workers have managed to partially reopen the TransCanada highway near Banff that was shut down earlier in the day by a mudslide, caused by heavy rains. The highway is now open to two-lane traffic west of Banff. The mud is one metre deep in some areas of the road and at its height it covered all four lanes of the divided highway. Authorities say it could take two to four days before the main road through the Rockies is back to normal. Traffic is being diverted through the Crowsnest Pass to the south, causing a detour of about six hours. So far, no deaths or injuries have been reported, but the RCMP are urging area residents to take in travellers stranded by the road closures.
