Lake Louise hotel complies with law September 22, 1999
Environmentalists have lost the first round of a legal bid to block a hotel expansion on the shores of Lake Louise. A federal judge ruled Tuesday that Parks Canada complied with federal laws when it approved a $45-million convention centre for Chateau Lake Louise last year. Justice Paul Rouleau said the courts lacked the expertise to question the decision. "This is a blow to all Canadians who love our parks and a setback for the future of Canada's national parks," said Peter Poole, director of the Banff Environmental Action and Research Society. The seven-storey convention centre will include 80 rooms, a 700-person meeting hall and a dining hall for 250 people. The project belongs to Canadian Pacific Hotels.
