Banff trying to curb rambunctious elk July 18, 1999
Banff is hoping to reduce the number of aggressive elk incidents that occur each year. A new elk management plan could be implemented this winter. There have been 55 incidents of aggressive behaviour by elk this year. Four people have been hit by charging elk and 32 others have been chased. Dave Dalman, chairman of Banff's elk advisory committee, says some people suffered bruises, but there have been no serious injuries. But, he adds, the aggression exhibited by elk seems to be escalating, "so we're quite concerned about that." Dalman's committee is trying to determine the best way of dealing with the elk. One option involves fencing the town, but that was rejected by Parks Canada and the town of Banff. Another option would see the use of dogs to frighten away the elk. An environmental assessment is being done to evaluate all the options. The study will be done by October. Then it will be reviewed by Dalman's committee and released for public comment. A decision on which way to go should be made by late fall. Related stories: elk |
