Copps has good news for protection of national parks March 1, 2000
Today, Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps introduced an amended National Parks Act into the House of Commons. Called the Canada National Parks Act it contains major measures to limit commercial growth, and confirms ecological integrity protection as a top priority. Measures to legislate limits to commercial development in all of Canada's 39 national parks are incorporated in the bill. This was required as a result of ecological pressures affecting many parks. For instance, excessive development in Banff National Park's Bow Valley has put the future survival of the park's bears and wolves at risk. Related stories: Report on Ecological Integrity |
