Ski hill operators hesitant to drop suit July 14, 2000
All trails in the dispute between federal Heritage Minister Sheila Copps and ski operators in Alberta's national parks still lead, it seems, to court. Copps raised hopes of an out-of-court end to the impasse when she offered Sunday to meet face-to-face with operators if they halted their lawsuit against the federal government. But the operators said Thursday they would insist on certain ground rules as a condition to dropping the legal action. Parks Canada, meanwhile, said Copps will refuse negotiations of any kind until the lawsuit is withdrawn. The owners of Sunshine Village, Banff's Mount Norquay, Lake Louise and Marmot Basin near Jasper applied for a judicial review in May 1999 after the federal government announced plans to set new limits on ski hill development in Banff and Jasper national parks.
