Hiker alert as bears come down for berries August 18, 2000
Wardens in Banff National Park are warning hikers to be wary of bears as a thick berry crop draws the omnivores to prime picking spots near the townsite. “Bears can be very preoccupied while feasting on berries and it’s important to let them know that you are nearby to prevent a surprise encounter,” said Ron LeBlanc, the park spokesperson. The berries are especially thick in open areas along trails and roadsides and near campgrounds. He said several bear sightings a day have been reported in the park over the past few days. As a result, Goat Creek Trail and Rundle Riverside Trail are closed until further notice. Related stories: carnivore warning |
