Critical changes to the law directing National Parks management have cleared the House of Commons. But they were not passed by the Senate in June. The Senate is now reviewing the Act and holding hearings, as is their right. However, we are deeply concerned that delay in the Senate could kill this much needed law if an election is called. “Making ecological integrity the legal centerpiece of national parks management should be an urgent goal of the federal government,” says Harvey Locke, Vice-President (Conservation) of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. “But if the Senate delays Bill C-27 for long, we will lose ecological integrity, and we will lose the chance to implement the cap on development in the mountain parks.”
