There have been no elk attacks in the Banff townsite so far this year, and an aggressive campaign to move habituated animals is being credited. Dave Dalman, chairman of the Banff elk advisory committee, attributed the drop to Parks Canada’s relocation program, where 153 habituated elk were captured and relocated to the wild in an attempt not only to cut down on the number of incidents, but to restore the natural ecology of the region as well. About 50 more elk will be relocated this year. Dalman said officials are hoping 50 more will be taken by predators.
