Standing up for our National Parks November 24, 2000
A recent study of grizzly bear mortality in Banff National Park found that 90% of the death of bears studied occurred within 500 metres of human infrastructure. The same study found that of 73 Banff bear deaths studied over a 14 year period, only two were due to natural causes. Secure habitat for grizzly bears is in becoming more and more rare, and their population is thought to be in steady decline. While it currently shows signs of improvement, the wolf population in Banff National Park in recent years has been very fragile, partly due to habitat fragmentation, and partly due to loss of members on roads and railways.
