Jasper residents will be going to the polls next October to elect their first mayor and a town council that will have the power to raise money through taxes. Heritage Minister Sheila Copps has given the Rocky Mountain town of 5,000 the right to set up its own municipality. If all goes according to plan, the newly elected government will be in place by May 2002.
