Back in 1989, the Keller Quartet from Hungary won third prize in the Banff International String Quartet Competition. But in the ensuing years, the first and second place winners from that year -- the Quatuor Manfred and the Cassatt Quartet, respectively -- have pretty much drifted off the radar screen, while the Keller have gone on to establish themselves as major players on the international scene. In any case, on Thursday the Keller delivered an outstanding evening of poetic, ego-free music-making.
