G8 summit still in cards for Banff? July 21, 2001
In the aftermath of yesterday’s riots in Genoa, Jean Chrétien, the Canadian Prime Minister, told journalists that he was still looking forward to hosting next year’s summit. It is widely expected that the Canadians will choose a remote and inaccessible location where it will be easy to protect world leaders and stop rioters disrupting their talks. Calgary in Alberta was tipped as the leading candidate for the G8 summit in 2002 after it successfully hosted the World Petroleum Congress last year. But Al Duerr, the city’s mayor, said that he had some reservations about accepting the honour. Related stories: G8 |
