Minister welcomes Alberta's newest municipality July 24, 2001
Jasper is now a specialized municipality within Jasper National Park. Jasper residents will have more direct input in determining what is best for their community after the Government of Alberta passed an Order in Council on July 23 to create the new specialized municipality in Jasper. This follows a July 19 vote by Jasper residents in which 74 per cent of votes cast were in favour of Jasper gaining municipal status. Residents of the community of Jasper will now be able to elect councilors and a mayor this fall under Alberta's Municipal Government Act and Local Authorities Election Act. While the community will have most of the authority of a municipality, Parks Canada will retain jurisdiction over land-use planning, economic development, the environment, and boundaries and annexation. The community of Jasper is the first specialized municipality in a national park to be created in Alberta. Related stories: Jasper autonomy |
