Summit organizer eases security concerns for Calgary July 25, 2001
Calgary's mayor and police chief say they're relieved to hear the focus of next June's G-8 summit -- for both politicians and protesters -- will be on Kananaskis, 100 kilometres away. That eases concerns civic leaders had that the city would come under fire from opponents of the international event. While Calgary leaders breathe easier, the news is providing little comfort to Canmore's mayor, who meets with the summit's main organizer this morning, and who remains fearful his town of 11,000, much closer to the summit site, will be overrun if the attention of expected protesters turns to the Bow Valley.
