The federal government’s plan to hold the 2002 summit meeting of the Group of Eight (“G-8”) in Kananaskis is a big mistake say three of the largest conservation groups operating in Alberta. “The implications of holding the G-8 meeting in the Kananaskis have clearly not been thought out; holding it there will be a huge mistake,” says Dave Poulton, Executive Director of the Calgary/Banff Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS). “This is an area of high environmental sensitivity. It’s also an area where there has been an extensive public debate and broad consensus reached on the importance of protecting its wilderness character.”
