Finally, about 6:30 p.m., the Rocky Mountaineer came to a halt at our destination in Banff, the center of Banff National Park. Founded in 1883, it is Canada's first national park. The mountain air (we were nearly a mile high) was cool and fresh when we disembarked from the train. All around us were snow-capped peaks. Elk lounged on the grass in front yards. Yellow aspen quivered. Ducks were diving in the Bow River. The reflection of evergreens in the water was like a pattern of lace.
