Smoke gets in our eyes, but health risks minimal August 23, 2001
The smoky air may have Calgarians thinking they're living in a campground, but they need not worry about smoke getting in their eyes -- or their lungs. "The air quality we are getting today is between good and fair," said Nick Spruit, enforcement and monitoring inspector for Alberta Environment. Spruit said Calgarians are at no immediate risk because particulates, the small particles smoke is made of, were below the Canada-wide standard of 30 micrograms per cubic metre. Spruit said Wednesday's reading was based on Tuesday's data of 23.7 micrograms per cubic metre. |
