K-Country campgrounds evacuated in largest closure ever August 30, 2001
Campers have been moved out of provincial park sites and hikers have left the trails in southwestern Alberta because of the extreme fire hazard. An area south and west of Calgary covering 800,000 hectares has been closed until further notice. The Alberta government is calling it the largest closure ever undertaken by the province. Park officials fear, after weeks of hot dry weather, thousands of weekend campers could be hazardous to the forests. |
