Student plans to keep track of grizzlies by satellite September 12, 2001
A University of Alberta student tracking grizzly bear and cougar movements around Canmore and the Crowsnest Pass is one of 20 Alberta graduate students to share $1.3 million in grants from the new Alberta Ingenuity Fund. Cheryl Chetkiewicz, a PhD student, is working with the Alberta Renewable Resources Department to put Global Positioning System collars on grizzlies and cougars in the two areas where people and wildlife mix. The aim of the project is to look at wildlife corridors and how best to ensure animals can move safely from protected areas, such as the national parks, across areas where housing and roads encroach, Chetkiewicz said.
