Travellers abandon flights for business and pleasure in wake of U.S. strikes September 19, 2001
As airlines struggled to resume flights this week, fearful travellers cancelled fall getaways and skittish employees abandoned business trips, many reluctant to board planes in the wake of terrorist attack... In scenic Banff, Alta., companies laid off employees, cut services and asked staff to take holidays in the wake of thousands of holiday cancellations to the Rocky Mountains. Banff relies almost exclusively on jets to shuttle international tourists to Calgary before they are bused to mountain resorts, said the president of the Banff Lake Louise Hotel Motel Association. Bill Squarebriggs said business dropped 30 per cent within one week of the terrorist assaults. A spokeswoman said the Banff Springs Hotel and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise have each fielded upwards of 2,500 cancellations. Related stories: Post-September 11 tourism recession | Fairmont |
