The Banff Centre for Continuing Education will be sentenced Thursday for environmental offences. Centre officials pleaded guilty in Banff provincial court last Thursday to the improper handling and disposal of PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls. Organization officials could face a maximum fine of $300,000, six months imprisonment, or both. The governors of the Banff Centre for Continuing Education were charged on Oct. 24, 2000, two years after the centre completed renovations. The charges stem from officials' handling of light ballasts from old fixtures. They were accused of disposing of the PCBs in a landfill and not properly storing the toxic chemicals.
