Alberta launches marketing campaign to boost winter tourism October 26, 2001
An aggressive new marketing campaign to boost Alberta’s tourism industry this winter will be launched tomorrow in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Olympian and former alpine ski racer Ken Read will be the national public relations spokesperson for the campaign. "Tourism is one of Alberta’s largest industries, and it has been significantly affected by recent world events," said Mark Norris, Minister of Economic Development with responsibility for tourism. "We estimate that the global slowdown in travel and tourism has had an impact of up to $100 million to date in Alberta." "Our message is that Alberta offers consumers tremendous value this winter, both in terms of pricing and the range of things to see and do throughout the province," said Derek Coke-Kerr, managing director of Travel Alberta. The campaign features full-page newspaper advertisements in Calgary and Edmonton highlighting vacation and getaway specials in Banff and Lake Louise. Similar special offers are being planned for Calgary, Edmonton and Jasper, and additional opportunities are being looked at in other regions around Alberta. Tourism supplements will also be delivered to more than 200,000 households around Alberta and 144,000 households in Saskatchewan. Related stories: Post-September 11 tourism recession |
