Banff homeowners angry about heritage listing November 5, 2001
The list of 231 properties has been prepared by the Banff Heritage Corporation. Gary Teeling, a lawyer hired by the group of concerned homeowners, recently spoke on their behalf to town council. He says the owners are angry they weren't consulted and feel they'll be hurt financially by having their homes on the list. "The effect that has is purchasers tend to shy away from those properties that are listed and they'll buy something else instead, so it does reduce the value and the marketability," says Teeling. Town council voted to send the list back to the Banff Heritage Corporation to look at the residents' concerns. Councillors will meet with corporation officials later this week to talk about what should be done with the list. Related stories: built heritage |
