Banff Springs rink put on ice

A slice of tradition will be hung up with the skates this winter as the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel freezes plans to open its outdoor skating rink. The rink has long been a favourite of guests and locals, but escalating insurance costs and the legalities involved in operating the ice surface have become unaffordable to the hotel, which has been in cost-cutting mode since the Sept. 11 U.S. terrorist attacks. People slipping and falling on the pathway leading to the sheet of river-flooded ice beneath the hotel has indicated the need for a major overhaul.
