Despite a less than stellar season last year and a slowing economy, Sunshine Village opened a new $16-million lift on Thursday. The new gondola from the parking lot to the lodge can not only handle more skiiers per car, but it cuts the travel time by about a third. Ralph Scurfield, Sunshine's president, says that even though the full impact of Sept. 11 hasn't been felt by the ski industry, he had to make a long-term investment into the hill. "Well, bottom line, it's a new attraction," says Scurfield. "It's like having a star player – it's like signing Roman Turek, if you're the Flames. Hopefully, this will bring people to the area." Scurfield says all the lifts and all runs at Sunshine will be open this weekend.
