Fuss over masturbating Mexican camouflages assault on arts funding

What this furor demonstrates, in short, has nothing to do with the squandering of public money. What it shows is the contempt that certain newspapers seem to have for the arts, and the ease with which art (especially visual art) can be made into an object of ridicule. In a society that appears to value business success above all other goals, the arts become not a necessity, nor even an ornament, but a threat.
