About $1,300 has been pledged to cover the Centre's portion of a residency by award-winning Mexican artist Israel Mora. Mora made headlines across North America last week because of an art project that involved storing seven vials of his semen in a refrigerator. The project was widely reported in the media, and received criticism for the use of government funding. Two-thirds of the cost of Mora's residency was paid by the Mexican government; the Banff Centre, which receives funding from the Canada Council, contributed the remaining $1,300. Banff Centre CEO Mary Hofstetter has apologized for any offence Mora's project has caused. But she defends Mora's art project, which she calls an examination of the concept of privacy in a public context.
