Memories of a grande dame with a face-lift January 2, 2002
“Unbelievable, isn't it?" smiles Louis Trono as he sips Earl Grey and takes in the winter splendour through a soaring window of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Just outside our cozy corner in the Rundle Lounge, a young, hopeful hockey player is skating while the winter sun kisses the snowy crown of the Cascade Range. On a nearby patio, a bride and groom pose for pictures. It's no wonder that my tea companion, who at 93 is the hotel's oldest living ex-employee, is still impressed with his old stomping grounds. The grand dame of Rockies hotels, which originally opened in 1888, has undergone a $75-million face-lift over the last three years. Yet, when returning guests arrive in the new lobby with its massive rock columns, medieval chandeliers and imposing staircase, they breathe a sigh of relief that the beautification of the elegant lady has only enhanced her original charm. The Banff Springs still exudes the ambience of a luxurious château. Related stories: Fairmont |
