Wardens dug from avalanche at Parkers Ridge January 13, 2002
Two Jasper park wardens buried by an avalanche yesterday were dug out by a third warden who narrowly escaped the slide. The three veteran wardens were carrying out tests to monitor potential avalanche risks when one swept down a slope on top of them, said Parks Canada spokesman Ifan Thomas. One of the wardens, believed to be 35, was last night listed in critical condition in the Foothills Hospital. The second man, dug out from under the snow, is in hospital with a broken leg, and the third man was uninjured. All three wardens, described by Thomas as veterans and experienced in their field, were working on Parker's Ridge about 110 km south of Jasper along Hwy. 93 at 2:30 p.m., when they were engulfed in the slide.
