Avalanche hazards strand skiers at Sunshine January 27, 2002
Roughly 2,300 skiers were stranded for nearly five hours at Sunshine Village Friday after Parks Canada closed the only road to the ski hill to check for avalanche hazards. Although the late-afternoon closure let skiers use runs for an extra half-hour, most ended up stuck in lodges at the top of the hill, the bottom, or in their cars at the parking lot until well after 8 p.m. "Ninety-nine per cent of the guests understood. They were really understanding about the situation," said Sunshine owner John Scurfield. |
