Ottawa pledges more money for new national parks

Plans to create 10 new national parks and five marine conservation areas got a boost Monday as Heritage Minister Sheila Copps announced an additional $144 million over five years. There is also money to restore the ecological health of the 39 existing national parks. An ecological action plan for the health of the national parks will be developed in the coming months. Among the key issues will be determining the human use capacity of some of the more popular parks such as Banff, which attracts millions of tourists a year.
