Two out-of-control fires in Kootenay National Park and fears of new outbreaks have forced unprecedented closures in Banff and Kootenay national parks. Most of Kootenay, including Highway 93 South is shut down, and more and more areas in Banff are being closed off on an almost daily basis due to the extreme fire hazard — the worst in decades. On August 5, thick smoke and the advancing Verendrye Creek fire forced the evacuation of Shadow Lake Lodge, a backcountry retreat nestled in high alpine meadows in Banff.
