Historic Kootenay Lodge spared August 7, 2003
The historic and treasured Kootenay Park Lodge has narrowly escaped a fiery demise after being sandwiched between towering walls of flames. The out-of-control Verendrye Creek fire came within 50 metres of the 1923 lodge, 10 log cabins and new information centre on August 4 as the owners braced for the worst. But park fire crews were able to draw the lightning-sparked blaze away from the wooden lodge in two directions, by using helicopters to ignite the surrounding forest from the air.
