Banff biologists work to protect rare snails November 28, 2003
Scientists are trying to rebuild an endangered snail population in Alberta. The critters' entire habitat covers the area of a volleyball court on Sulphur Mountain. The researchers say low water levels may be partly to blame. Humans have had a disastrous effect by stepping on the tiny creatures. One year ago, they reintroduced 50 snails into a spring. Since then, the snail numbers have jumped to more than 7,000. Related stories: Banff Springs snail Other news for November 2003 |
