Alberta’s free-flowing mountain rivers could someday be dammed to quench the province's quickly growing thirst, Environment Minister Lorne Taylor said Thursday. David Schindler, a University of Alberta professor and world-renowned ecologist, called dam building a terrible idea. “When you store water you expose more of it to evaporation.” Gary Parkstrom, with the Mountain Parks Watershed Association, said mountain dams would wash away portions of the valleys, where the largest diversity of species is found. “The devastation on our mountain ecosystems would be tremendous,” he said.
