Canada’s historic sites at risk from budget cuts, neglect: auditor February 11, 2004
Canada's historic sites, archives and national library are crumbling as budget cuts and government neglect threaten to drive the last spike through the nation's culture, Auditor General Sheila Fraser warned Tuesday. Banff's popular Cave and Basin National Historical site and mineral springs — which commemorates the birthplace of Canada's national park system in 1885 — draws millions of international visitors, but is in only “fair” condition and falling into disrepair, Fraser reported in an audit.
