The year 2003 was one of the worst for the Canadian tourism industry, says Statistics Canada. Campgrounds, outfitters, cottages and bed and breakfasts suffered a decline in operating revenues in part because of hurricanes in the Atlantic region, summer heat waves in Central Canada and forest fires in British Columbia. “Adverse conditions such as the Iraq conflict and the unexpected outbreak of SARS and other public health hazards — BSE and West Nile Virus — had a depressing effect on travel worldwide,” the agency said.
