Bear 66 killed by train near Castle; leaves three cubs August 20, 2005
Banff's best known grizzly bear is dead after being struck by a CP Rail train in Banff National Park yesterday. Parks Canada officials said Bear 66 was most likely feeding on berry bushes with her three cubs near the tracks around 11 a.m. when she was hit about 8 km east of Castle Junction. The bear had gained notoriety for her degree of comfort around people. As a result, Banff wardens had spent thousands of hours in the past few years monitoring her and trying to deter her from areas close to people. Parks officials say they are now contemplating what steps to take pertaining to the survival of Bear 66's three orphaned cubs. Other news for August 2005 |
